Thursday 7th February was a very exciting day for me as after a month of hectic activity the library was officially opened by Edmund Page with Teacher Lawrence, from St Peter’s school, and I delivering a speech and Alice, a student in P3, cutting the blue ribbon. Some of the older boys had come and helped paint the walls and a local carpenter made sets of shelves then we added a carpet and cushions to sit on. Then we added to our original stock of reading books from the Mobile library. Christine, the new librarian, and I had a great time shopping at MK books, Gustro and Aristoc to source a varied selection of African storybooks, sets of readers and non fiction information books plus dictionaries and atlases. We arranged the books according to titles and levels and have complete sets of Primary and Secondary text books for students and teachers to access.

We put maps of the world, Africa and Great Britain on the walls and information posters and hung up some bunting and a world globe! It looks like a library now! The children were so excited to see a room full of wonderful books and have quickly got into a routine of coming to the library after school to read together and access help with homework from Sandra and Christine. Over the next few weeks I plan to set up workshops for the children to come and create their own story books and play reading games.

A love of books and  the joy of reading provides opportunities to learn and develop knowledge of the world, so open a book and see what it has to offer!
